Development of Mental Health Programs in Schools Affected by Hurricane Katrina

This project is helping schools affected by Hurricane Katrina to:

  • Identify their needs related to the long term mental health recovery of affected students, in light of existing mental health resources
  • Consider evidence-based mental health program options as identified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
  • Identify barriers and facilitators to implementing such programs, to result in lessons learned for the future and for other school districts

The project team expects to produce an educational outreach packet (incorporating lessons learned during this project) that will provide state and local school administrators and policy-makers with information needed to implement effectively trauma-informed mental health services in a time of crisis and/or on a daily basis to students in their jurisdictions.
