Measuring Trade-Offs Across Liberty, Privacy, and Security — 20 May 2009

video cameras outside in urban setting

This study demonstrates the validity of stated choice methods as an objective approach for obtaining empirical-based evidence to inform decisionmaking in the emerging areas of security and data protection. The aim is to better understand and quantify people's choices in trading off liberty, privacy and security. In particular, we examine preferences for different levels of security improvements, personal data requirements and surveillance systems when individuals consider real-life situations such as applying for a passport, travelling on UK's national rail network or attending a large-scale event (e.g. the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games).
