Price of Intoxication: The Case for a Minimum Price for Alcohol — 30 October 2009
Both the English and Scottish governments have expressed interest in introducing laws setting a minimum price—perhaps 40 pence per unit of alcohol—for all alcoholic beverages. Compelling research from the University of Sheffield has found that setting a minimum price could save the taxpayer millions of pounds every year in health, criminal, and other costs, and prevent thousands of premature deaths, writes Lila Rabinovich.

A Mid-Term Review of the Swedish EU Presidency — 8 October 2009
Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and President of the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union, addressed a RAND Europe audience during its annual reception in Brussels on 8 October. The evening brought together representatives from private organisations, the European Commission, policy institutes, EU member states and European media. In his speech Mr Bildt provided a review of the Swedish Presidency, and outlined key EU foreign policy priorities for the future, reinforcing the importance of solid, evidence-based policymaking within the institutions of the EU.

RAND Europe Will Host the 2009 Annual Meeting of the INTEVAL Group — 03 June 2009
INTEVAL (INTernational research group on policy and programme EVALuation) meets once a year to address cutting-edge issues on evaluation theory and practice around the world. This year's session will take place in Cambridge from 3-5 June.
RAND Europe's Senior Advisor Takes Up New Chair in Health Services Research at University of Cambridge — 15 May 2009
One of RAND Europe's senior advisors, Professor Martin Roland CBE, has accepted the position of professor of health services research within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine with immediate effect. Roland, a leading health services researcher in the United Kingdom, joined RAND Europe as a special advisor to help develop its health policy research programme.

Ellen Nolte Joins RAND Europe as Director of Health and Healthcare Team — 14 May 2009
Ellen Nolte, formerly senior lecturer at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, has joined RAND Europe as the new director of the health and healthcare team. Nolte also is an honorary senior research fellow at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.

International Conference on Combating Maritime Piracy — 27 April 2009
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and International Maritime Bureau (IMB) joined RAND Europe in coordinating a conference on "Reclaiming the Seas: Combating Piracy." The conference examined the political, military and commercial challenges posed to European states by maritime piracy. It also focused on the legal issues that Europe faces in combating the phenomenon—rules of engagement, multi-jurisdictional difficulties and judicial processes.

Philippa Foster Back joins Board Of Trustees — 04 August 2008
Philippa Foster Back OBE, who who has more than 30 years of business experience and has been director of the Institute of Business Ethics since 2001, has joined the RAND Europe Board of Trustees. "Philippa's experience and expertise will make an invaluable contribution to the success of RAND Europe," said RAND Europe President Jonathan Grant of Foster Back's appointment.
RAND Europe achieves ISO9001:2000 compliance — 15 May 2008
RAND Europe has successfully maintained its ISO9001:2000 certification, after the first year compliance audit. The Assessors were "extremely impressed" with the consistently high standards of business and quality processes, particularly the extensive mechanisms for feedback and organizational learning. Dr Phillipa Towlson, Head of Project Management and Strategic Quality said "With the engagement and commitment of RAND Europe staff we have been successful in embedding the raft of business and quality processes required to create the robust platform on which RAND Europe will go forward."
RAND Europe opens new office in Brussels — 28 April 2008
RAND Europe has opened an office in Brussels, Belgium, to facilitate its growing portfolio of work with Brussels-based policy institutions, including the European Commission (EC). "This truly demonstrates RAND's commitment to a pan-European focus," said Jonathan Grant, president of RAND Europe. "We can diversify and increase our client base, which enables us to become a larger player in informing European policy making."
