RAND Research

The research conducted within the RAND Corporation and the RAND-Qatar Policy Institute supports clients across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia in the following areas.

Education Reform

RAND researchers have policy and hands-on experience in education and training. Research includes K-12 assessment and accountability, school reform, teachers and teaching, higher education, military education and training, worker training, and substance-abuse prevention in schools. Much of the work is done within RAND Education.

Energy, Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation

RAND work in energy, the environment, infrastructure, and transportation builds on a long history of research on policy issues, often balancing environmental protection with economic development and other social needs. RAND specializes in transportation issues, including planning, policy, safety, and environmental considerations of air, water, and surface systems. Many other RAND divisions participate in research on critical infrastructure, such as power grids or waterways. Much of this work is done within RAND Infrastructure, Safety, and Environment.

Health and Healthcare

Several divisions at RAND, including RAND Health, contribute to health and health care research. Results are available to the public through the RAND Health Database. View all Health and Health Care Documents Available Online.

Science and Technology Policy

RAND research on science and technology serves a mix of clients, including federal agencies, state, and other government entities, businesses, and foundations. Much of this research is conducted within the Transportation, Space, and Technology Program of RAND Infrastructure, Safety, and Environment.

Labor and Population

RAND research on workforce and workplace issues includes labor markets, the effect of new technologies, economic development, workers' compensation and disability, occupational safety, immigration, workforce trends in education, and military recruitment and retention.

RAND research on population and aging includes family planning policy, vulnerable populations such as the elderly, demographic trends, environmental effects, security implications, as well as retirement savings and financial literacy. Much of the work is done within RAND Labor and Population and RAND Institute for Civil Justice.

Defense and Security

RAND conducts a broad array of national security research for the U.S. Department of Defense. RAND also carries out an extensive research program in homeland security, homeland defense, and terrorism-related research for the U.S. Government, as well as selected research for key allied governments and ministries of defense.

The following RAND Federally Funded Research and Development Centers conduct national security research: RAND Project AIR FORCE, RAND Arroyo Center, and RAND National Defense Research Institute.

RAND research on crime, violence, and substance abuse offers objective analysis in place of emotion or ideology. Much of this research is conducted by the Safety and Justice Program of RAND Infrastructure, Safety, and Environment.

Arts and Culture

RAND is building a research capability in the arts to provide useful data and analysis to policymakers, arts practitioners, and the academic community. Much of the work is done within RAND Education.
