RAND Experts Available on 20th Anniversary of the Fall of Berlin Wall

RAND Corporation experts are available for interviews to discuss the 20th anniversary (Nov. 9) of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Among the topics they can address:

  • How has the nature of European security affairs changed since the fall of the wall?
  • Did the "Age of the Superpower" end that day?
  • Eight countries of the former Warsaw Pact are now in the European Union and NATO. Was this even conceivable in 1989? And how difficult was the transition from Soviet satellite to European ally?
  • How are U.S-Russian relations 20 years later?
  • How should NATO and the EU manage its relationship with Russia? Is NATO still relevant?

Amb. Robert Hunter is a senior advisor at RAND and former U.S. ambassador to NATO who specializes in NATO, Russia and military strategy. He is the author of "U.S.-NATO Immersion Course" and "Georgia: Breakdown of Vision the West Had for a New Europe."

Stephen Larrabee holds the RAND Chair in European Strategy and specializes in NATO, Russia, Turkey and Eastern Europe. He is the author of "The Challenge to Soviet Interests in Eastern Europe: Romania, Hungary, East Germany" (1984), "America and Europe: A Partnership for a New Era" (1997) and "Revitalizing the Transatlantic Security Partnership: An Agenda for Action" (2009).

Christopher Chivvis is a foreign policy expert specializing in NATO, transatlantic relations, and European security and defense policy. He is the author of the soon-to-be-published "Recasting NATO's Strategic Concept: Possible Directions for the United States."
