RAND Experts Available to Discuss President Obama's Decision on a European Missile Shield

Several RAND Corporation experts on national security and U.S.-European and U.S.-Russian relations are available today to discuss President Obama's decision not to move forward with a Europe-based missile shield.

Among the topics they can address:

How will this decision affect relations with Russia and Europe, particularly Poland?
  • Does this give Russia room to expand its influence in Europe?
  • Will other land- and sea-based missile defense systems prove effective in defending the United States, its allies, and troops aboard from missile attack?
  • How will this decision influence other negotiations, including a new strategic arms reduction treaty?
  • Amb. Robert Hunter is a senior advisor at RAND and former Ambassador to NATO. Hunter specializes in NATO, Russia and military strategy.
  • Stephen Larrabee holds the RAND Chair in European Strategy and specializes in NATO, Russia, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. He is the author Danger and Opportunity in Eastern Europe.
  • Olga Oliker is a senior international policy analyst at RAND who specializes in U.S.-Russia relations and Russia's foreign and domestic policies. She is the author of Russian Foreign Policy: Sources and Implications.
  • David Mosher is a senior policy analyst at RAND and an expert on space militarization and ballistic missile defense. He is a former associate physicist at Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University.
