Lessons for Improving Your Agency's Recruitment and Retention

Police agencies across the nation are struggling to develop and maintain qualified workforces. Center analysts have worked extensively with numerous agencies on these and other critical force planning issues. On October 29 – 31, Center staff members will participate along with experienced practitioners in Northwestern University Center for Public Safety‘s Recruitment and Retention Graduate Retraining Seminar, which is open to all law enforcement professionals. Some highlights include:

  • Key note address regarding police personnel challenges and the changing labor pool by Dr. Laura Miller, Behavioral Scientist at RAND
  • Opening and summary remarks about recruiting and retaining officers by Dr. Alexander Weiss, Director of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety
  • A briefing on the connection between homeland security and staffing, by Dr. Jack Riley, Senior Policy Researcher and Acting Director of the RAND Center on Quality Policing
  • A presentation of innovations in hiring and recruiting by Dr. Ellen Scrivner, Deputy Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department
  • A panel discussion of informed practitioners and researchers about current practices and trends facilitated by Dr. Jeremy Wilson, Behavioral Scientist and Associate Director of the RAND Center on Quality Policing
  • A seminar on community recruiting by Captain Kevin Johnson of the Sacramento Police Department
