About Other Regional Research at RAND
Latin America and Africa policy research are growing areas at RAND.
Recent research on Africa has focused on two key areas: security and global health initiatives, particularly concerning HIV/AIDS. RAND has received foundation support for projects investigating the best use of funding for disease prevention and treatment in Africa, and has also conducted research on nation building (e.g., in Somalia) and uncovering the global terrorism infrastructure.
Research in Latin America began with Cold War military studies on U.S.-Cuban relations, an outgrowth of the Cuban missile crisis of the early 1960s. It has expanded over the years to health, education, economics, demographics, and political reform in the developing world. Recent RAND projects cover integrated areas of research such as science and technology, health, drug policy, security, and economics:
- Examining the future of the information revolution in Latin America
- Investigating new forms of conflict called netwars, that are fostered by new technologies
- Developing predictive models of epidemics in the region
- U.S. counternarcotics policy, arms trafficking, and political instability in Colombia
- Economic models of Cocaine production and foreign demand for Latin American drugs
- Demographic diversity and change in the Central American Isthmus
- Emerging markets
- Government reform
