CAPP Holds Winter 2004 Advisory Board Meeting

The Winter 2004 meeting of the Advisory Board of the Center for Asia Pacific Policy was held on December 10. RAND researchers gave several briefings at the meeting, including a presentation by CAPP Director Nina Hachigian about a proposed future Asia research agenda for RAND.

RAND Analysts Present Research at High Level S&T Conference in South Korea

To emphasize a government-wide focus on technological development and innovation, the Ministry for Science and Technology held a high-level symposium in Seoul on December 8. Somi Seong and Steven Popper of RAND were invited to give two of the four keynote presentations at the meeting.

Cyber Security Discussed Among RAND and Japanese Electric

Industry Representatives

Utility executives representing 10 Japanese electric companies met with members of RAND in Santa Monica on November 18 to discuss ways to improve cyber security among the electric power industry in Japan.

Head of New Pakistani Think Tank Visits RAND

On October 26, the RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy (CAPP) held a roundtable discussion with Mr. Javed Jabbar, the head of the new Pakistani think tank International Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution. The group discussed the major future challenges facing Pakistan.

President of Korean Defense University Visits RAND

On October 14, RAND welcomed the President of the National Defense University of South Korea to its headquarters in Santa Monica, California. Susan Everingham gave Lieutenant General Young-Ki Kwon an overview briefing of RAND. The group, which included Bruce Bennett, Nina Hachigian, Norm Levin, and Somi Seong, then discussed possible areas of cooperation between the two organizations, including possible joint research, exchange of visitors, and co-sponsored conferences.

August 2004

RAND Welcomes Top Japanese Security Experts

On August 30, RAND welcomed two preeminent Japanese security experts, Satoshi Morimoto, a former director of the security policy office in the Japan Defense Agency and a widely respected defense intellectual, and Takashi Kawakami, a former foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Kaifu and Professor of International Relations at Hokuriku University. Rachel Swanger chaired the session, which Bruce Bennett, Nina Hachigian, Norman Levin and Jed Peters also participated. The group discussed the impact of the US Global Posture Review on Japanese defense policy, Japanese and US policy toward North Korea, and Japanese attitudes toward China.

July 2004

Dr. Henry Kissinger Visits RAND

Former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger visited RAND in late July for briefings and discussions with RAND researchers. Topics included future technology trends, nuclear weapon proliferation, political and economic trends within China, and counterterrorism.

James Thomson Visits Republic of Korea

To explore opportunities for further cooperation with the Republic of Korea, RAND's CEO, James Thomson, spent June 7 - 12 in Seoul meeting with Korea's Foreign Minister, Defense Minister, National Security advisor as well as other cabinet officials and private sector executives.

Spring 2004 CAPP Advisory Board Meeting

The RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy (CAPP) held its first Advisory Board meeting in Asia on June 11, 2004, in Seoul, South Korea.

Former Ambassador Discusses Security and Stability in Pakistan

Ambassador Husain Haqqani, former advisor to Pakistani Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, visited RAND's Washington office March 3, 2004 for a discussion about recent security developments and stability in Pakistan.

High Level Delegation from China Visits RAND

On February 26, 2004, RAND welcomed a high level delegation from China that discussed the future of the US-China relationship, and the current focus of China's diplomacy, Taiwan and Hong Kong with a group of RAND researchers.

January 2004

Constructing a Chinese Road Map for the North Korea Nuclear Crisis

On January 26, 2003, CAPP hosted a seminar by Dr. John Park, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, at RAND's Santa Monica office. Park discussed his efforts to construct a model Chinese road map for resolving the North Korea crisis that represented a synthesis of the analyses Park collected from policymakers and elites.

Japan's Economy

CAPP welcomed Arthur Alexander, a former RAND researcher and President of the Japan Economic Institute on January 6, 2004. Dr. Alexander gave a presentation on Japan's economy, tracing the source of recent problems such as excess business investment and predicting a somewhat brighter future. Charles Wolf chaired the session, which RAND analysts Rachel Swanger, Nina Hachigian, Benjamin Zycher, Julia Lowell, William Overholt and others attended.
