Impact of the Built Environment on Mental Health

Principal Investigator: Roland Sturm, PhD

This project will examine how the built environment affects mental health and answer the question: What is the impact of the built environment on mental health outcomes in adults, including emotional well-being and the development of mental illness?

Methodology

The project will use longitudinal data from the Health Care for Communities survey — a unique national study of mental health in 60 communities across the United States. Outcomes include emotional well being and the development of mental illness.

Intended product

The findings will inform decision interventions aimed at modifying the built environment to enhance mental health outcomes.
