Neighborhood Effects of Disablement in the Elderly

Principal Investigator: Jeannette Rogowski, PhD

National data from the Health Retirement Study and the Panel Study of Income Dynamics will be used to examine how physical and social aspects of neighborhoods affect functional and cognitive aspects of disability among the elderly.

This project will answer the following questions:

  • What are the effects of the built and social environment on the health and health trajectories of the elderly?
  • How and at what points do neighborhood environments from earlier in life influence health in old age?
  • Do neighborhood features have differential impacts on important sub-populations of the elderly, such as men and women, people with low socioeconomic status, and racial/ethnic minorities?

Methodology

The project will use geo-coded data from the Health and Retirement Study and the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (including longitudinal data), which will allow examination of the role of neighborhood factors during both mid- and late-life on health and the disabling process.

Intended product

The findings will inform neighborhood-level interventions to reduce disparities in health and functioning in old age.
