2007 NIA Conference Overview

The Value of Health: Conference Overview

Sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA)

In February 2007, the National Institute on Aging sponsored a conference on assessing the value of health. NIA intends to incorporate economic valuations of disease into its decisions about allocating research funding; the purpose of the conference was to strengthen research in the field by developing a future research agenda. Conference results would also be useful to the World Health Organization and relevant to national health accounts research.

The conference was held at the RAND Corporation headquarters in Santa Monica, California. The conference was attended by 21 experts representing NIA, leading academic institutions, the private sector, and the national media.

Based on the discussion, attendees recommended topics for a future research agenda focused on valuing health.
