RAND Center for e-Health

The RAND Center for e-Health is the focal point of RAND Health's research on "e-health" issues. The Center's goal is to attract resources and foster interdisciplinary collaboration to capitalize on a growing interest in understanding and developing the potential of the Internet and related technologies to improve the healthcare system.

Current projects in the Center include:

  • An evaluation of the economic and clinical impact of the Medley TM GuardRails Smart I.V. pump (Alaris Medical Systems, Inc.) to see if this point-of-care medication-safety technology reduces the incidence of adverse intravenous drug events and associated hospital costs.
  • A pilot study to establish the feasibility of developing usable and useful computerized templates for Veterans Health Administration primary care clinicians to improve the processes of care for vulnerable patients.
  • A project to develop criteria to assess the usefulness of Community Health Assessments (CHAs) in New York State; to develop, pilot test, and operationalize a web-based tool to assess and improve county CHAs at the local level; and to evaluate the use of the web tool and offer technical assistance for its use.
  • A web-based survey instrument to gather feedback from women on quality of life following treatment for noninvasive breast cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ). The information will be incorporated into a cost-effectiveness analysis of treatments.
  • A study to define how information technology, such as computerized physician order entry, affects the U.S. health care system.
  • Continuation of a project to enhance the capabilities of the Health Cost Calculator, a RAND-designed web-based tool to help employees make informed decisions about health plan value and about contributions to a flexible spending account.
