RAND Legacy Circle Program

RAND Legacy Circle

RAND established the Legacy Circle to honor and recognize those who have chosen to help ensure RAND's future by making a planned gift now or by including a bequest to RAND in their wills. Co-chaired by Alumni Association members Linda and Brent Bradley and Barbara and Milt Weiner, the Legacy Circle seeks to identify all who have made such a gift or provision, or who wish to do so.

To quote Winston Churchill: "What is the use of living, if it not be to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?" This has been, and will continue to be, RAND's legacy to the nation and the world. It seems entirely fitting that those who have helped shape the legacy be able to do so in perpetuity; hence the name and nature of the RAND Legacy Circle.

While the benefits to RAND seem obvious, you may not realize that your participation in the RAND Legacy Circle might afford the opportunity for you to make a larger gift than you ever dreamed possible. While there are many ways to accomplish this, we want to tell you more about the potential for a charitable bequest to RAND in your will.

The best way for you to make such a bequest depends on a number of factors, including your assets, family considerations, and the number of your charitable interests, recognizing of course that you may wish to make similar bequests to your alma mater and/or other institutions you currently support.

One method is to give a specific amount. Stating a dollar amount to be given in your will offers complete certainty as to the amount that will ultimately support RAND's ongoing research efforts.

If you would like to establish a definite relationship between your charitable and noncharitable legacies, you might wish to specify a percentage of the assets passing under your will to RAND. This way, your gift to RAND will automatically adjust with fluctuations in the total amount passing under your will.

You may also choose to designate all or part of "what's left." Safeguarding the interests of your family and other loved ones should always come first in your estate plans. If you are not comfortable with bequeathing either a specific amount or a percentage of your assets, you may wish to consider providing RAND with a gift from the "residue," or "what's left," after specifically providing for your loved ones. Furthermore, you may provide that all, a specific amount, or a percentage of the remainder of your estate shall pass to RAND. This alternative can ultimately result in a very substantial gift.

You need not disclose the amount or percentage of your charitable bequest to become a member of the RAND Legacy Circle. Notice to RAND of your intent will qualify you as a member of the Legacy Circle, and in doing so you will join many fellow Alumni Association members as well.
